Hydropower is considered a low-carbon energy source because it generates electricity by harnessing the energy of flowing water, which does not produce direct greenhouse gas emissions. Its environmental impact, however, varies depending on the scale and type of hydropower projects.

Large-scale dams can disrupt local ecosystems, affect water quality, and displace communities, altering river flow and wildlife habitats. They may also release methane from submerged vegetation in reservoirs, contributing to greenhouse gases. On the other hand, small-scale hydropower and run-of-river systems tend to have minimal ecological disruption, making them a more sustainable option.

Overall, hydropower has a relatively low carbon footprint compared to fossil fuels but can still have significant environmental trade-offs depending on project design and location.
